Abstract

There is an increasing concern with the psychological aspects and the prevention of complications in the growing number of persons with diabetes in our society today. Joslin (1959) referred to studies by Wilkerson and Kroll (1947) in Oxford, Massachusetts concluded that 1.7 percent of the community had diabetes. Schmitt (1971) concluded that by current estimates, there are approximately six million established or undetected diabetics in the United States of which 95 percent of these are older than 15 years of age. About 72,000 persons become diabetic each year and about one American in fifty is diabetic. Due to greater longevity, the incidence of diabetes will increase.
